The research team found that a male, male-less fly was able to take part in the entire pollination of the flower, meaning the pollen could be mixed with pollen from a female, as well as any male drones who came after.
That means the male’s role was “critical,” said Richard Venter, professor at Imperial College London.
“It seems to suggest that the male flies, although they could help pollinate other flowers, were not the primary pollinators of those plants,” Venter said. “So if I want some pollen from the flowers, I have to take advantage of them on their own.”
The paper, which appeared in the journal Science Advances, could be used by scientists to see if ins강릉안마ect species are affected by changing habitat over time.
Venter said researchers are also thinking about how natural disasters like lightning strikes could affect pollination. For example, if a tornado ripped through the state of Tennessee, a drought would affect how honeybees are able to gather pollen from the flowers, Venter explained.
Scientists are already thinking about ways to study pollinator health. In fact, a team at the University of New South Wales (UWS) is currently working on a project to examin로투스바카라e how insects are affected by pesticides.
Venter said that insects were able to pollinate some flowers because there were fewer of them. But more complex pollination, where each flower was treated differently, was needed to ensure that they were successful.
For the new study, the researchers used the European-based Sporesense lab in the UWS, which looks for and analyzes new spores. The lab uses tiny glass beads embedded in glass to look at a fly’s nervous system, which could also help determine the pollen-rich traits of a species.
“Insects are able to capture, harvest and move pollen,” Venter said. “You can use it to figure out how different species are doing.
Scientists can compare the movement of pollen that came from a certain site across various habitats in order to better understand the function of those organisms in the ecosystem.
But more research is needed to find the specific chemicals and bacteria in a fly’s gut which might influence the pollination of a plant, he said.
