Police in the city say officers used tear gas, rubber bullets and batons on demonstrators when the crowd refused to move back. Authorities said some of the people arrested were charged with rioting and resisting arrest and a police officer was injured.

The police have since released a list of those arrested. They include the Rev. Al Sharpton, an outspoken figure in the black community in St Louis.
