The federal Opposition leader says he is offering new waste measures in an attempt to “pinch the heartstrings” of Adelaide on the issue of waste.
In a speech to a business conference on Friday, Abbott said his action plan to tackle waste, which is included in the Senate budget, would be announced at an Adelaide meeting of business, community and industry leaders on September 28.
An early warning system is also be호 게임ing introduced to ensure waste is collected and disposed of properly.
Labor has used the event to push for a full, nationwide ban on the use of plastic bags and containers.
Mr Abbott said the state’s leading garbage companies had agreed to a voluntary agreement to work toward making their products waste-free.
“I spoke this morning with our company, [Sydney] Cartons, and they have agreed to help us in developing the waste-free technology,” he said.
“I’m in agreement with them and we’re going to get that technology out to every city and every state.”
Mr Abbott says a waste solution for SA will cost $5 billion a year over 20 years.
He says governments and local authorities need to take on “toxic waste” – or, as he puts it, “environmental waste”.
“This is about getting in the zone as far as I’ve got this idea of waste,” he said.
“That’s what we’ve got. What we’ve got on our plates, that’s toxic waste. But this is the way forward to get rid of that toxic waste and move forward to a cleaner place.”
